Last Night's Meeting - Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Our meeting last night, hosted by Cheryl, was at Real Thailand, Thai Restaurant . We decided to eat "Me Generation"-style wherein we each ordered our own food rather than sharing family-style (a great expression coined by Jenny's husband Will, which I quite like and will now adopt!).
We discussed Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Reviews were mixed--I think we all appreciated the ideas the book invoked, and how well he predicted our modern day. Our world has really progressed into a "politically correct" one, which he was somewhat afraid of seeing happen; however, I don't know that we found that necessarily detrimental. Certainly the world has sped up and become more impersonal, as his book was showing. Nevertheless, it didn't seem like a complete picture of that world--it was not necessarily created to be believable.
I was surprised to learn in our meeting how prolific Bradbury has been, and also to learn he is still alive and very productive. He has his own website: www.raybradbury.com which includes entries he has written. Notably, there is an article entitled "Happy Birthday to Me" written in 2002 when he turned 82. I hope to go back and explore this page more--it seems he has a very well-developed imagination.
